This Week #21 (1-25-04)

Getting Focused

How hard is it to get focused these days. We are moving in a hundred different directions (ministerial speaking) and everything and everyone is competing for our attention. The Super Bowl is coming up next week and advertisers will be rolling out some of the most expensive commercials produced all year. They believe they will get your attention, and they are probably right. I know some of the ones I have seen in the past are just really great fun. I’m not always sure what the product is, but the hype is wide. We will have a Super Bowl party on Sunday evening (you know us, any excuse to get together and eat) both before and after our Worship service. But that begs the question of this note.

How does God get our attention? I can imagine that all of us would have an answer or two, but here’s another thought. Why would he need to get our attention in the first place? Is it because we have gotten focused on other things? Is it because we have reached the point in our lives where seeking His kingdom is not the top priority of every day? Have we become so calloused to the things of God that there is another pursuit that can compete with His call to ministry, maturity, and llove, so that He is constantly seeking our attention?

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said simply, seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and everything else will fall into place.

Perhaps you have heard stories over the years about how God got someone’s attention. I guess it is safe to say that His “commercials” pretty much wipe out the competition when it comes to getting attention. But why go through that? Just get your heart and mind focused on Him and His calling and direction in your life. When we place Him in first place, nothing else seems to distract us from His design for our life. We understand He controls each way each day.

Enjoy the Super Bowl party, but understand, it’s just an excuse to get us together for a little one-on-one with Jesus.
