This Week #23 (2-11-04)

Sweetheart

Some people call February sweetheart month. I think every month is sweetheart month if you have a wonderful sweetheart like I do. My sweetheart and I have been together for 45+ years since we first starting noticing each other in the 9th grade. I needed someone to do my Algebra homework, and she needed someone to tell she didn’t like him. We were a perfect match. Now, we have been married over 40 years and she can still do my Algebra, and I can still feel her dislike for some of my silly ways. The difference comes in the fact that we have grown into one person because we have intertwined our hearts together.

The Truth is I have another sweetheart. It is the Church of Jesus Christ. Because the llove of God is shed abroad in my heart, I have the capacity to llove infinitely so there is never any conflict. I can llove both completely. I have to remember, however, that both demand a certain portion of my time and concentration, and I don’t ever want to shortchange either one. Learning how to know who gets what portion and when is the difficult part.

I think it ought to be that way with all of us. (Ephesians 4:1-3) We owe some portion of our life to His Church and its ministries. Since the Father has called us to ministry through His Church, being light and salt in our community, and lloving the brethren with an eye toward mutual support, we have to make some quality decisions about the division of time.
I learned a long time ago that I cannot make that decision for anyone else. I may have that desire, but it is foolishness. You can make that decision. I urge you to do so in the light of His calling in your life. Begin or continue the process of intertwining your heart with His.
