It’s a Lie!
There’s a sign along the freeway (121) going toward downtown Ft. Worth that advertises the law firm of Mimi Coffee. I know Mimi, and have talked with her on several occasions. Her sign refers to a “government lie”, and regardless how you feel about it, she is right. The Government lies. One lie that was perpetrated on us by the government of the state of Texas was that the Lottery would cure all the financial ills of public education. If we could just obtain the revenues from a state lottery, all would be well, and we could get on with our lives knowing that our children were being educated with “free” dollars that would be spent elsewhere (probably that evil Louisiana) if we didn’t take action. Where in the world is that money? Does anybody know? Except those who pocket it, I mean. Now, here we go again. Our state Legislature is either proposing (some, including Governor Perry) or talking (everybody else) about slot machine gambling, and possibly casino style gambling in places like Reunion Arena and the Grand Prairie horse-race track (sorry, I don’t remember the name of the place). And, lo and behold, here comes Ft. Worth wanting some of that gambling down in the Stockyards. I don’t know how you feel about gambling. I think I’m pretty much opposed to it. But I know for sure I am opposed to lying. I am opposed to Governmental entities telling me they are going to solve Educational finance with profits from gambling. It’s a lie. It’s a big, fat, juicy governmental lie. They (your Texas Legislature) burned us last time with this lie (where’s the money?). Now they want to do it again – only worse! Do I hear a voice somewhere saying, “Weaver, shut-up!” Sorry, not this time. It’s a lie, and I hate lying. © Weaver 2004 |
